Escape the city to Bawley Point
Bawley Point is the name of a tiny country town, situated on the NSW South Coast approximately 4hrs drive from Sydney. If it wasn’t for my friend Danny from The Stables, who recently bought and restored this beautiful wooden house, Bawley Cottage, I would probably never have thought of going there. But I was curious to check it out, so we booked it in for March and invited a couple of friends to join us for a long weekend.
Bawley Point Cottage
At the end of a quiet back street in Bawley Point, you will find a tucked away cottage, behind palm trees and big bushes. Bawley Cottage is made up of two bedrooms - a main bedroom with a king sized bed overlooking the garden and a smaller guest bedroom on the other side, a bathroom, a large open kitchen/lounge room and a wild garden and wooden terrace with a BBQ area and a very comfy hammock. All newly restored with a modern and minimalistic style. The house is quintessentially ‘hygge’ and the interior has that special Scandinavian feel to it.
Time is easily spent reading in the hammock on the balcony, cooking, eating, napping... and playing Uno. Bawley Cottage is the ultimate place for slowing down and relaxing. The parrots will tell you when it’s time to get up in the morning and lack of internet signal will make you more present and forget all about social media and work emails.
Shoalhaven Beaches and the surrounding national parks are definitely worth a visit while you are there. One of the nearby beaches, Pretty Beach is a 10 min. drive from the cottage. The beach lives up to its name with its uncrowded stretch of sand and calm turquoise water (image 2 and 7).
There are kangaroos almost everywhere in the National parks and around the beaches. If you look carefully, you can even spot a few of them jumping around in the garden of the cottage at night. A note to any curious “tourist” like myself, remember that as cute as they look, they are still wild and free, so don’t get too close.
You can find Bawley Cottage on airbnb or book through bawleycottage.com.au. We went in late summer (March) but this place is also a perfect spot for a winter getaway (just pack a jumper and a scarf).
